Snow Warning – Our Tips for Preparing Your Property

With snow, rain & strong winds often the norm across the country, the winter weather can cause damage to your home, leaving you cold and costing you money. So, to avoid and minimise all this, it is worth making sure you are ready for the winter storms and chill.

You can prepare your home for whatever winter has in store by following these simple and affordable tips from disaster recovery experts, Rainbow International. Here are a few tips to make your home feel warmer this winter and save on your heating bills too.

Clean the gutters to help prevent water penetrating your property

Remove all leaves and debris home’s gutters so that winter’s rain and melting snow can drain away adequately. Clogged drains can form ice dams, in which water backs up, freezes and can cause water to seep into the house.

As you’re hosing out your gutters, look for leaks and misaligned pipes. Also, make sure the downspouts are carrying water away from the house’s foundation, where it could cause flood damage or other water damage.

Prevent frozen pipe damage

A burst pipe caused by a winter freeze can bring havoc to any property, with the resultant water loss from plumbing installations inspect all pipework in the property to ensure that it is adequately insulated . You need to check internally in often uninhabited areas such as lofts and in garages.

Wrap them with pre-moulded foam rubber sleeves or fibreglass insulation, available at DIY stores.
If you’re really worried about a pipe freezing, you can wrap it with heating tape.

Insulate

Insulating your loft may cost you a little money now, but it will save you more in the long run.

Inadequate insulation in lofts allows heat to rise up and out of your home, forcing heating systems to work harder to keep your home warm. Loose insulation can settle and leave gaps at the tops of walls, which is exactly where it’s needed to stop the loss of warm air as it rises.

Dodge the draughts

According to official sources, draughts can waste five to 30 per cent of your energy use. Simple procedures can be introduced to save some of this loss, by and either purchasing or making your own draught snake. You can easily make one yourself by placing a rolled bath towel under a draughty door. You can use any scraps of fabric and fill with sand or cat litter for weight. Simple window draughting can also be highly effective in reducing heat loss and reducing fuel bills, especially in single glazed units, which are available from most DIY stores.

Mind the thermostat

It’s easy to forget to turn down the heat when you leave the building, but doing so is one of the easiest ways to save money. Most households shell out 50 to 70 per cent of their energy budgets on heating, so why pay for what no one uses? Keep the heating system on low when not at home, ensuring the property is still protected but not overly heating while no-one is at home
