The Challenge With Leak Detection When Dealing With An Escape Of Water

The problem with an escape of water is that it isn’t just about the clean-up. Of course, with Rainbow International’s regional teams on hand to help, cleaning up isn’t as difficult as it once was. However, with an escape of water, you can’t even move forward with the clean up until you’ve used all your leak detection powers to find the source and fix the leak.

Often pipes are buried deep in walls, under tiled kitchen floors, and even in between yours and your neighbour’s properties. This can make finding the cause of the escape of water difficult, time consuming and even costly.

You may be reluctant to pull up those limestone tiles, and even if you do, who’s to say you’ll find the right spot?

There may be tell-tale signs; patches of damp or maybe a puddle appearing seemingly from nowhere, but until you know for sure, you risk causing more damage in the search for the offending pipe.

However, these days technology has really advanced the accuracy of leak detection equipment.

Rainbow International has teams trained to detect the source of an escape of water using a variety of different technologies for their leak detection services, so you can minimise the destruction caused in trying to find that split pipe.

Thermal imaging

Thermal imaging involves the technician using a thermal imaging camera to identify even the smallest of surface temperature changes which can help identify the source of the leak.

Acoustic Testing

Where water leaks out of a pipe it creates very quiet vibrations, but with the use of a sophisticated ground microphone, we can identify the source of these vibrations to pinpoint the water leak.

Tracer gas

If neither of these options bring any joy, there’s always the use of Tracer Gas. This is a slightly more in-depth process, as water is drained from the system and a combination of nitrogen and hydrogen is introduced under pressure to the system. The hydrogen molecules are the smallest and therefore escape from the pipe, and are detected by a sensitive gas detector, revealing the source of the leak.
