Odour removal is typically the most complicated part of smoke and soot damage repair and restoration following a fire because it is invisible and takes specialist know how to carry it out efficiently and quickly.
Time is of the Essence: The sooner you start the fire restoration process, the less the property will be damaged.
From the start, a significant amount of soot & smoke odour damage can be mitigated if items deemed to be either beyond repair (or better cleaned and deodorized offsite) this doesn’t make sense or is badly worded – if its beyond repair theres no point taking it off-site to clean it are removed from the premises as soon as possible. This step alone can mitigate a significant amount of the smoke odour.
What is the timeline of a fire?
America’s Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC) have analysed the timeline of a fire as follows:
- • Within Minutes – Acid soot residues cause plastics to yellow; nearby small appliances to discolour and permanent discolouration of high porous interior décor materials like marble and alabaster.
- • Within Hours: Acid residues cause staining or yellowing of: grouting, fibreglass bath fixtures, counter tops and furniture finishes as well as appliances in the vicinity of the fire, particularly refrigerators.
- • Within Days: Painted walls will start to yellow permanently; metal corrodes, pits and rusts; wood furniture requires refinishing; vinyl flooring requires refinishing or replacement; clothing becomes soot-stained and upholstery becomes permanently stained.
- • Within Weeks: Synthetic carpet fibres may yellow or discolour permanently; silver plate is corroded permanently; glass, crystal, china may require replacement due to severe etching and pitting caused by prolonged exposure to acid soot residues.”
From this, you can see that the damage is likely to escalate at an alarming rate which is why, if you experience fire and smoke damage at your property, you should call out professional fire restoration specialists as promptly as you can.
