The days are gone when a drop in water pressure meant pulling up the floorboards and channelling out the walls to find a cracked pipe.
So, what are the options when it comes to finding the source of that escape of water?
Technology available for water leak detection
Acoustic listening devices for leak detection
Many of our 70 UK based branches have sophisticated and powerful ground microphones that can be used to trace and pinpoint the leak. By following the vibrations of water as it escapes from a pipe, a trained technician can identify the exact source quickly and easily.
Infrared thermal imaging
Using thermal infrared imaging technology for water leak detection, we can see where cold or warm water flows through pipes, and where it escapes too.
Infrared thermal imaging can help with water leak detection. It enables us to see through walls and floors. Focusing on temperatures in the space behind walls and under the floors, a leak can usually be located quickly.
Using an ultra-sensitive tracer gas detector, is another option to establish the source of a leak.
Gas made up of 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen can be injected into the pipe. Hydrogen as the smallest and lightest gas molecule, can escape from the offending pipework. As it makes its way to the surface, the composite gas can be detected by an ultra-sensitive gas detector.
Then, using a borescope we can take advantage of the introduction of cavity walls.
A borescope (tiny camera) can be placed in the cavity of the wall through just a couple of small bore holes. The camera can then be used to locate any damp areas or standing water, or even get a clear view of the suspect pipework.
This approach enables you to find out exactly where a leak is coming from, and gives you the added advantage of seeing what damage has been caused.
These water leak detection methods are best carried out by trained professionals. Our leak detection teams have specialists on hand 24/7 to help you identify the source of the leak. They can also dry out your property safely and effectively once the leak has been fixed.
With 70 branches across the UK, we’re bound to have a branch near you – on average there is a Rainbow International branch just 23 miles from any postcode in the UK.
