Last month Brian, this year’s second named storm, confirmed the arrival of our storm season.
Is this the end of flood damage for Warwickshire’s residents?
Finally, Warwickshire residents could breathe a sigh of relief as plans were unveiled to test flood defence systems in Stratford Waterside.
Stratford-upon-Avon Waterside residents have suffered in recent years. Flooding of homes and businesses in 2012, 2014 and 2016 caused severe flood damage across the region. Currently, the area remains at risk of flooding.
The flood defence testing took place on the 7th November, and involved the deployment of a temporary flood barrier.
This provided an opportunity for staff and partners to learn how to quickly and safely erect flood protection measures to prevent or reduce flooding of homes and businesses in the event of the Avon bursting its banks.
The challenges of flood defence testing
It wasn’t without its challenges though. Waterside was closed to traffic, and some routes closed to pedestrians too. However, residents were in agreement that it’s a small price to pay when it comes to protecting their homes and livelihoods from flood damage.
Installing temporary flood barriers in areas at risk of flooding is a costly business and is likely to become more so as populated areas at risk of flooding increases. Particularly given that we are still building on floodplains.
The plan to roll out 40K of temporary flood defences is an ambitious and one, and one that will be tested with more storms set to challenge us this winter.
